Emotional Intelligence in Equine Assisted Therapy
Horses are often seen as majestic and powerful creatures, but their emotional intelligence is undeniable. According to Julie Peterson, executive director of North Country RIDE, horses are aware of human emotions and can sense when someone is feeling down or upset. “They know what you are feeling before maybe you even know what you’re feeling,” Peterson said. “It’s a safe place for people to either talk about or process their feelings, and horses are so nonjudgmental, and they’re really truth seekers.”
Therapeutic Applications of Horses
North Country RIDE, a nonprofit organization, utilizes horses in equine-assisted therapeutic activities (EATA) to treat a range of disabilities and neurodivergences. The organization’s mission is to provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals with physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral challenges.
- Physical disabilities: cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spinal cord injuries
- Cognitive disabilities: autism, intellectual disabilities, ADHD
- Emotional disabilities: anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Neurodivergences: Tourette’s syndrome, dyslexia, dyscalculia
Retirement Horses for Therapy
At North Country RIDE, the horses are not just working animals but also beloved companions. Many of the horses were previously used for other purposes, such as barrel racing or show jumping, but are now retired and dedicated to therapy work.
| Horse Name | Breed | Previous Life |
|---|---|---|
| Duke | American Quarter Horse | Retired barrel racer |
| Cisco | American Quarter Horse | Retired show horse |
Horseback Riding and Balance
Horseback riding is an excellent way to improve balance and core strength. The motion of the horse’s gait can help individuals with physical disabilities to develop greater stability and coordination.
“It’s just magical, the thing that happens when people are with therapy horses. We have riders with autism that can’t really articulate what they are feeling or what their needs are until you get them on a horse, and then they’re able to communicate their needs better and learn how to communicate that to the horse.”
Awareness and Fundraising
North Country RIDE relies on volunteers and donations to continue its programs. The organization is hosting a Kentucky Derby Party on May 3, with tickets available for $35. This event will raise funds for the organization and also provide a fun and social atmosphere for attendees.
- Volunteer orientations: April 12 and April 24
- Kentucky Derby Party: May 3 at the Cast Iron Bar and Grill
- Donations welcome
The Power of Community
Therapeutic riding programs like North Country RIDE demonstrate the importance of community in supporting individuals with disabilities. By providing a safe and supportive environment, the organization empowers individuals to reach their full potential. “There’s a huge need for people who like horses or like helping people, people who want to just do something physically active,” Peterson said.
